WEEK 3, OCTOBER 3 - 7
During these weeks we have been working on different topics among the variety of subjects that we have.
When it comes to Language and Arts for example, we have been dealing with the introduction of different letters (uppercase and lowercase) such as A, C, D, T, O, H, G, S, I, M, R, F, K, P, B and sounds like short /a/ and short /i/. Together with these letters and its handwriting, we have worked on L-blendings (clip, flat, flag, etc.), rhyme and plurals. Regarding grammar we have been learning about statements and sentences and the students had to recognize whether the sentences were statements or not and to write capital letter at the beginning of the sentences. Indeed, we have also been practicing their reading skills always paying attention to the letters that we were learning during these weeks so as to make them learn not just how they are written down but also how we pronounce those words. Furthermore, we have also learnt some sight words with which the students might be getting familiar with such as He, She, can, I, play, school, do, etc.
As far as I have been able to observe, at the very beginning it was really hard for them to understand the instructions and they find it hard to find a proper answer but by the end of this week, I have realized that little by little they are becoming more autonomous and that they don’t need my help and support as much as they need it at the very beginning. It has been by drilling and repetition that they have learnt how it worked and what they had to do in each handout. When it comes to handwriting, I have realized that for example letter G, D, B and H where the ones with which most of the students struggled or find them harder to copy down. Regarding reading, most of them are able to recognize the letters and they try to pronounce them correctly despite sometimes they need my support as expected as in their mother tongues the letter is pronounced differently such as letter “C” in Russian language or “G” in Azerbaijani language. Finally, we have also worked with words that included both sounds and they hand to find rhyming words (cap, hat; hit, sit).
When it comes to Math, we have been working with Odd and Even numbers, skipping by 2, addition, real world problems and Number Bonds.
During these weeks some students seem to still have problems to differ between Odd and Even numbers as well as some of them find it hard to add up when the result is more than 10 as most of them used their fingers or crayons to count. About number bonds, they all got the idea and understood how to proceed as well as they did with real world problems.
Finally, with Units of Inquiry we have been working around the topic of “Rights and Responsibilities” and what it means in their lives.
At the very beginning it was hard for them to differ between rights and responsibilities but by the end of this week they finally got the idea that to have rights we should have some responsibilities. They have also understood that when it comes to responsibilities, sometimes it means also to follow some rules.
